About this place
Crack through the caramelized crust with a spoon, and rich, tender sweet potato emerges from beneath in the parlor's signature sweet potato brûlée. Situated in the scenic Nakanoshima area of Arashiyama, Potato Chestnut Parlor Tin Tan Kyoto Arashiyama is a dedicated sweets stand where visitors can pick up an array of sweet potato treats to enjoy outdoors.
The brûlée balances the comforting natural sweetness of roasted sweet potato with the deep aroma of brittle caramel, presented in a noticeably generous portion. Adding a topping of cool ice cream has become a favorite way to experience the play of warm and chilled textures. For something easy to snack on while walking, the thinly sliced, crispy fried sweet potato chips glazed with honey and black sesame seeds—known as kiriage—are hard to miss. Packaged conveniently in bags, they are also available in a half-and-half set alongside fluffy daigaku imo (candied sweet potatoes).
When in the mood for something colder, the sweet potato soft-serve parfait loaded with potato chunks and the smooth sweet potato shake make refreshing alternatives. Soft-serve bases include milk, matcha, and a Kyoto-exclusive Kyo Mix combining both, while a Mont Blanc soft serve prepared with 100% domestic Japanese chestnuts rounds out the menu. Taking a freshly prepared treat to a park bench with views of the Katsura River and Togetsukyo Bridge makes for an easy, pleasant pause in an Arashiyama walk.
